As India Crosses 2 Lakh Startups: A Women Founder's Services Checklist
More women are founding companies in India than ever, and the ecosystem has never had so many resources. Yet the founders I mentor still tell me the same thing: we do not know what we do not know. This checklist is meant to fix that.
A crowded, supportive ecosystem
A government release in June 2026 reported that recognised startups in India reached around 2.23 lakh by March 2026. The ecosystem offers many resources, but also fierce competition.
The seven services most startups need
- Company registration and DPIIT recognition.
- Founders' agreements, IP and contracts.
- Accounting, GST and payroll set-up.
- Funding readiness: model, deck and data room.
- Product and technology, including security and data protection.
- Brand, trademark and marketing.
- A compliance calendar and board processes.
Sequence matters
Fix legal and tax foundations before heavy marketing spend; they are far harder to repair later. Many founders do the reverse and pay for it in the first audit.
Maya's takeaway
Build the boring foundations first. Then your energy, your funding and your story can go entirely to the product and the customer.
Frequently asked questions
Is DPIIT recognition necessary for every startup?
No. It is optional but can give access to certain benefits. Compare the benefits with the cost of compliance before applying.
